This article addresses low retention and graduation rates among historically marginalized students in nursing programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Attrition increases economic costs and reduces the lifetime earnings of students who may have become nurses; nursing schools must identify effective support strategies and interventions to reduce attrition and encourage persistence. Mentoring is a proven success strategy to support historically marginalized students, helping them navigate challenges, improving academic outcomes, and increasing the diversity of the nursing workforce.
